Protect Saiga Antelopes - Awareness Campaign in Kazakhstan

Under the Caspian Pipeline Consortium-K (CPC-K) environmental project for protection of saiga antelopes in Kazakhstan a multimedia portal named “In Search of Going Extinct Siagas” has been launched. The Internet portal describes these animals, their habitat and challenges of their conservation in down-to-earth language.
Facts and findings of up-to-date scientific research are graphically presented in the form of infographics. The portal informs in detail about the environmental project of antelope satellite tagging implemented by the Kazakhstan Association for Biodiversity Conservation (KABC) with the CPC-K financial aid.
The ‘Sacred Saiga’ project started in 2016. CPC-K purchased 30 collars with satellite transmitters to monitor the population of saiga antelopes. These state-of-the art devices are used in Kazakhstan for the first time and they are powered by solar panels. After 2-2.5 years of use, collars automatically open, and they may be reused.
It is rather complicated to put satellite collars on animals. How do Kazakh zoologists manage to cope with this task? Photos and videos of saga capture and satellite tagging are available at http://kyely-kyik.kz/.
Poachers pose the most serious threat to the saiga population. Therefore, CPC believes that it is extremely important to conduct the environmental awareness campaign for local residents.
For reference:
The CPC pipeline system is one of the largest investment projects with foreign capital in the energy sector in the CIS. The length of the pipeline connecting oil fields in Western Kazakhstan with the Marine Terminal in Novorossiysk is 1,511 km. CPC’s Marine Terminal is equipped with Single Point Moorings that allow to load tankers safely at a significant distance offshore, including bad weather conditions.
