CPC Telecom Group Drill in Kazakhstan

On 12-13 September 2018, the Republic of Kazakhstan (Atyray region) hosted CPC-R/K Telecom Group drill on repair of damage and emergency recovery of the CPC fiber optical communication line.
Representatives of the CPC Eastern, Central and Western Regions, as well as Marine Terminal took part in the event. The drill involved 23 persons, two mobile optical cable measurement laboratories, measuring instruments, optical fiber welding machines, satellite communication facilities and other equipment.
According to the drill script, there was a loss of integrity of a protective pipe of the communication line structure at KP 209 of the CPC-K oil pipeline near the Ural river crossing due to an unauthorized work at a farm which caused damage to the optical cable with all fibers completely ruptured. The control and communication systems of the CPC trunk oil pipeline were transferred conventionally in an automatic mode to a backup satellite communication channel. A team of CPC technical specialists arrived promptly at the damage site for response. The drill participants practised damage repair by installing a permanent cable insert.
In the course of the drill the employees perfected their skills of safe work performance on the communication cable infrastructure, mobility of the Telecom Group personnel and technical facilities in an emergency was checked, as well as promptness of communication facilities deployment and efficient use in field conditions.
For reference:
The CPC pipeline system is one of the largest investment projects with foreign capital in the energy sector in the CIS. The length of Tengiz-Novorossiysk pipeline is 1,511 km; more than two thirds of all export crude oil from Kazakhstan and crude oil from the Russian fields, including those in the Caspian Region, are transported by this route. CPC Marine Terminal is equipped with three Single Point Moorings (SPM) that allow to load tankers safely at a significant distance offshore, also in poor weather conditions.
