Health, Safety and the Environment | | |
CPC places the highest priority on protecting the health and safety of its employees and others and on protecting the environment. These objectives are addressed through the Company HSE Policy and a systematic approach to management of HSE issues.
CPC provides its shippers with reliable, efficient, safe and ecologically sound transportation of crude oil by the CPC pipeline transport, process and storage facilities. It is our business.
In 2002, CPC introduced and agreed with Supervising Agencies many regulations. practices, programs, and most importantly a Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS) that provides CPC the systematic approach to achieve its overarching objectives of protecting the health and safety of people and the environment.
An HSE MS is only as good as the leadership management provides in support of HSE. The HSE MS was approved by the General Director and agreed with the Supervising Agency.
The HSEMS provides the basis to comply with the legislation and regulations of the host countries CPC operates in. It also provides the structure to introduce new and best international practices in providing a safe work environment. Those best practices include operations, maintenance, engineering and HSE specialists working together to develop effective procedures that address labor safety, environmental monitoring and control, emergency and routine repair procedures, permit to work systems, risk assessments and audits of facilities.
In 2007 CPC commenced implementation of the International Standard, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management and in 2008 implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Standard OSHAS 18001. CPC’s intent is to obtain international certification of both standards in 2009. Achievement demonstrates CPC’s goals of continuous improvement of the HSE management system and subjecting this to independent verification
CPC employs various control practices to assure environmental safety. Emergency preparedness and response is a critical aspect of our daily activity in the area we operate. CPC has a tiered response composed of our own volunteer brigades supported by local and regional professional response teams. We have frequent drills and take lessons learned from each drill to improve our ability to respond.
