Summing-up the results of the project “Protect Nature of Our Native Land” in the Astrakhan Region

On 21 May 2018, the results of the traditional environmental/educational project “Protect Nature of Our Native Land” were summed up in the Astrakhan Region. It is the third year that the project is being implemented in the region by Caspian Pipeline Consortium with support of the Caspian Scientific/Research Fisheries Institute (CaspNIRH).

The ceremony was attended by CPC-R Deputy General Director Mikhail Grishankov, Deputy Chairman of the Astrakhan Region Government – First Deputy Minister for Industry, Transport and Natural Resources of the Astrakhan Region Sergey Kuchumov, Deputy Chairman of the Astrakhan Region Government – Minister for Social Development and Labor of the Astrakhan Region Oleg Petelin, Chief Executive of FGUP CaspNIRH Arsen Mirzoyan, as well as scientists and specialists of the scientific center.

This year, a creative competition was held within the framework of the project, involving the students of the social institutions of the Kharabalinsky, Enotaevsky, Limansky, Narimanovsky and Krasnoyarsky Districts of the Astrakhan Region. They submitted to the jury 21 works of agitation nature in the nominations of “Environmental performance” and “Decorative/applied arts”. The winners received valuable gifts: TV sets, synthesizers, tablets.

The creative competition was preceded by environmental lessons, where the CaspNIRH scientists and specialists told the students about the environment and nature of the region, fish species inhabiting the Volga-Caspiy basin, technology of sturgeons growing. Practical classes in an ichtyopathology laboratory provided the schoolchildren with new knowledge in biology, chemistry, skills of handling a microscope and eyelens. The scientists described the present-day technologies used for water research, methods of determining concentration of biogenic substances.

By tradition, release of Russian sturgeon and beluga filgerlings was timed to coincide with the summing-up of the results of the environmental/educational project “Protect Nature of Our Native Land”. It is important that this spectacular and memorable event was attended by the winners and runners-up of the creative competition. All in all, 8 265 Russian sturgeons weighting 150 grams and 350 belugas weighting about 250 grams were released in the delta area this year.

You will recall that the environmental/educational project “Protect Nature of Our Native Land” is aimed at increasing the population of sturgeon species under threat of extinction in wildlife and fostering an attitude of care towards nature among the children and youngsters.

For CPC, environmental projects are an important charity in the regions of its presence. So, for example, in Kalmykia the saiga population protection program has been implemented for many years already, while in the Stavropol Krai the environmental/educational program is targeted at increasing the population of axis and red deer.

For reference.

The length of the pipeline connecting the oil fields in Western Kazakhstan with the Marine Terminal near Novorossiysk is 1,511 km. CPC Marine Terminal is equipped with single point moorings which allow for safe tanker lifting at a considerable distance from the shore, also when the weather conditions are unfavorable.

The Expansion Project includes rehabilitation of 5 existing and construction of 10 additional pump stations (2 in the Republic of Kazakhstan and 8 in the Russian Federation), six new storage tanks (100,000 cu.m each) in addition to the existing four near Novorossiysk and a third SPM at the CPC Marine Terminal, and also the replacement of an 88 km pipeline section in Kazakhstan with a larger diameter pipe.
