On May 20, 2021, the results of the environmental awareness project “Let’s Save Our Country’s Environment” were official summed up in Astrakhan Oblast. Caspian Pipeline Consortium with the assistance of the Volga-Caspian Branch of the All-Russian Fishery and Oceanography Research Institute (CaspNIRKh) have been implementing this project for six years already.
This year, as part of the project, scientists from the Volga-Caspian Branch of FGBNU VNIRO ("CaspNIRKh") held 30 open classes in 10 schools and social-rehabilitation centers in Kharabalinskiy, Yenotaevskiy, Limanskiy, Narimanovskiy and Krasnoyarskiy districts, where CPC facilities are located. The conservation of sturgeons, unique relict fish species that have been extant since the time of the dinosaurs, is the topic of classes for schoolchildren.
The ceremony timed to coincide with the project completion was attended by representatives of CPC-R, VNIRO, Astrakhan Oblast Government, Federal Fishery Agency, winners of the children creative contest, teachers and parents. First, adults and children released specially bred young sturgeon from the pier of the CaspNIRKh base in the village of Ikryanoye. Then there was an award ceremony for the winners of the creative literary contest and a festive concert. The jury awarded gift certificates to 44 authors.
More than 118 000 Russian sturgeons and 600 young beluga sturgeons started their independent life in the natural habitat. The fish was released in the presence of a special Commission set up by the resolution of the Federal Fishery Agency, which included representatives of federal and regional authorities, scientific and public organizations. With special equipment they measured the quantity and weight of released juvenile fish, drew up and signed a respective act.
It should be noted that during the years of the environmental awareness project "“Let’s Save Our Country’s Environment” carried out in schools and social-rehabilitation centers of Astrakhan Oblast young scientists and specialists of the Volga-Caspian Branch of FGBNU "VNIRO ("CaspNIRKh") gave 150 open lessons. A lot of work has also been done to increase the population of sturgeon species. During this time, more than 136 thousand species of Russian sturgeon, beluga, barbel and sterlet were released into the natural habitat.
