CPC guarantees efficient and environmentally safe movement of crude oil

The Project is designed to increase the trunk pipeline capacity

CPC is inspecting crude oil storage tanks using laser scanning technology

20260929.jpgBy the end of 2026, the large-scale project will conclude providing initial laser scanning of all CPC-R crude oil tanks. Technical diagnostics utilizing this advanced method have been underway since 2023. This has been a joint effort between CPC experts and Gubkin University researchers.

To date, 17 of the company's 19 crude oil tanks have been inspected.

Laser scanning delivers a substantial improvement for tank integrity assurance. A three-dimensional geometric model is created after each inspection to monitor the impact of low-cycle loading on the tank wall. Scans completed so far have been instrumental in securing statements confirming compliance of tank structures with industrial safety requirements.

Beyond their academic relevance, these studies offer tangible value to the wider oil and gas industry. Case in point, at CPC Marine Terminal, where the large RVSPK-100 000 tanks operate in mountainous terrain, the work includes comparative scanning at various wind speeds.

Following the inspections, analysts will gain insight into how major tank shells resist immense forces induced by even comparatively minor wind speeds, and how changes in external operating conditions affect structural reliability.

CPC Pipeline System is one of the major projects in energy sector in the CIS. The length of the Tengiz – Novorossiysk pipeline is 1,511 km. This route transports over two-thirds of all Kazakhstan export oil, and crude from Russian oil fields, including those in the Caspian Region. CPC Marine Terminal is equipped with three Single Point Moorings (SPM) that allow to load tankers safely at a significant distance offshore.
