CPC guarantees efficient and environmentally safe movement of crude oil

The Project is designed to increase the trunk pipeline capacity

Scope of Work During Scheduled Shutdown

20250523.jpgOn 23 May 2025, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium crude pipeline system was put back into operation after 72-hour scheduled shutdown. During this time, scheduled regular maintenance of various crude pipeline systems, pump stations and Marine terminal was completed.

The work was performed on the mechanical process, power and electrical equipment, instrumentation, automation and control systems. CPC ongoing and capital projects activities that can only be done with pump station and pipeline equipment stopped, were also implemented.

For example, at Atyrau PS activities were performed within the framework of crude oil quantity and quality indicators measurement system refurbishment. Next to this pump station at KP 204 km of the pipeline, a new PIG Launcher and Receiver trap for cleaning and inline inspection was tied in and a ball valve was replaced. Three repair structures were installed at the line pipe in Atyrau region in the Republic of Kazakhstan and three more segments were repaired by grinding.

A new 8-kilometer segment of the oil pipeline near the Astrakhan PS was connected in Astrakhan region, PIG L&R traps for cleaning and inline inspection, leak detection system software was updated and other activities were performed. A measuring and computing complex of oil quantity and quality indicators measurement system was replaced at Komsomolsk PS in the Republic of Kalmykia.

Obsolete linepipe block valve electric actuators, tees and electrical insulating joints were replaced at PIG L&R traps in Krasnodar and Stavropol krais.

Traditionally, a large amount of work was performed at the CPC Marine Terminal near Novorossiysk. Integration tests of the control system and SCADA were performed as part of the construction of the pressure regulation station and pressure surge relief system. Installation of a flanged spool and a blind on the receiving manifold of pressure reducing station at the Shore facilities was performed. Spader plugs were removed and spacer rings were installed near three ball valves and on the pressure surge relief system outlet manifold tee. A new temperature sensor has been installed at the pipeline going out from the Marine Terminal Tank Farm.

It should be noted that such scheduled shutdowns take place maximum twice a year. CPC plans them well in advance and agrees on timeframe with all shippers. This information in also taken into account by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in developing their annual schedule for oil transportation through Tengiz - Novorossiysk crude pipeline. Thus, the planned work of all the participants in the process of oil production and transportation through CPC crude pipeline is ensured.

Crude lifting from the Marine Terminal has now been resumed in the standard mode.

For information:

CPC Pipeline System is one of the major projects in energy sector in the CIS. The length of the Tengiz – Novorossiysk pipeline is 1,511 km. This route transports over two-thirds of all Kazakhstan export oil, and crude from Russian oil fields, including those in the Caspian Region. CPC Marine Terminal is equipped with three Single Point Moorings (SPM) that allow to load tankers safely at a significant distance offshore.
